A Future Immune to Cancer

In 1988, Drew M. Pardoll, MD, PhD, received a “lifeline” in the form of a grant from the Cancer Research Institute that allowed him to continue his research on the immune system and its role in fighting cancer. His works has since led to several lifesaving immunotherapies including anti-PD-1 checkpoint blockade and cancer vaccine approaches. In 2016, he was named director of the prestigious Bloomberg-Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at Johns Hopkins University, where he leads laboratory and clinical studies aimed at developing immunotherapies to save the lives of more cancer patients.
