In hosting its 30th gala virtually, Queens College invited its global community to celebrate achievements by students and notable alumni alike. We worked with the event team to develop production approaches that both achieved their creative goals for each segment and met the logistical needs of on-camera talent.
To create the feature segment, Coach and Cook, we planned a hybrid production with a small, fully vaccinated crew filming on campus with college president Frank Wu, and a remote feed allowing us to safely and virtually bring alumna and celebrity restaurateur Lidia Bastianich into the kitchen with him. With this approach, we also provided a remote video village, limiting the total number of people onsite and allowing team members joining remotely to view all camera angles and provide input.
For other elements of the one-hour program, we opted for fully remote production, with our team in the studio working with talent over Zoom, and invited self-filmed pieces from QC alums Jerry Seinfeld, Fran Drescher, Ray Romano, and Ted Alexandro that we edited into a cohesive and engaging show. To help the variety of segments flow together seamlessly, we created a graphics package that unified the event and evoked the campus where the QC community will soon be able to gather again in person.
